Tax Genie is the better choice over Engager for Australian practices that want complete, checked client details with less chasing. Its guided forms lead to checked answers and a signed engagement letter, with Australian client checks and handover to your tax software.
Tax Genie for Australian Client Onboarding
Tax Genie takes your client from a guided form to checked answers and a signed engagement letter. Questions adapt to the people and entities involved, and progress saves as the client works. Staff can prefill known details and have a colleague review the request before sending it.
After the client sends the form, Tax Genie runs rules for number formats, register matches, cross-field consistency and missing documents. AI then reviews the answers for common mistakes. Every TFN is removed before AI review.
For example, a client might say the company is registered for GST but leave the reporting frequency unanswered. Tax Genie emails a plain list of fixable issues and reopens only the affected sections on the same private link. The client makes the corrections. Automatic email and SMS reminders chase anything outstanding until it arrives.
That checking step changes what reaches your team. Staff receive the corrected form, with a record of changes, instead of treating every completed form as ready for the return. Staff can turn individual checks on or off.
Engager’s Practice Workflow
Engager describes itself as practice management software for UK accountants and bookkeepers. Its documented work spans proposals and engagement letters through to tasks, deadlines and client communications. It also has a branded client portal and mobile app.
Engager’s forms page describes built-in and custom fields, prefilled answers and responses that map back into client records. Forms can go to individual clients or groups, with automated follow-ups. Its engagement-letter page describes practice templates, a service library and letters tailored to the agreed services and fees.
Online signing is part of Engager too. Clients can sign on a phone or computer, while staff track document opening and signing. The signed copy stays with an audit trail. Signing and reminders are shared capabilities in this comparison.
The Onboarding Steps Compared

| Sign engagement letters online | Letters drafted from answers, with online signing | Tailored letters and built-in electronic signatures |
| Send automatic reminders | Email and SMS for outstanding items | Automated form follow-ups and deadline or job-phase emails |
| Review submitted answers | Rules and AI, then section-level client corrections | Forms collect and map responses into the client record |
| Move details into another system | Tax software and Xero Partner Hub + Practice Management records | Xero accounting client and invoice sync; TaxCalc client sync |
Tax Genie combines answer checking with Australian client checks before approved details go into your tax software. That sequence connects collection to the records the practice needs for its work.

From Client Invitation to Signed Engagement
Consider a fictional new company client with two directors. The practice needs company details, the relevant people’s information, supporting documents and an engagement letter signed by the appropriate person.
With Tax Genie, staff send one request covering the company and the people involved. Each person sees only their own items. The form guides the client through the applicable questions, then rules and AI check the answers. Fixable issues return to the client before the corrected form reaches the practice.
The engagement letter uses those answers. Staff can adjust the letter for this client without changing the practice template, then send it for online signing. Tax Genie keeps the signed version with who signed and when. Clients can return to their portal using a code sent to their mobile.
In Engager, the documented steps use a portal form to collect company and client information, map answers into records and generate a tailored engagement letter. The portal handles document exchange and signing. Automated emails can follow service deadlines or completed job phases, and staff can review those emails before they go.
For the fictional company, staff must also establish that the requested records describe the company and the people authorised to act for it. A populated field and a signature record each answer a different question from an identity determination.
Later requests also matter. Tax Genie lets existing clients confirm known details, answer the new year’s questions and sign the new engagement letter, individually or through a bulk campaign. Engager documents bulk forms, prefill and automated follow-ups, so recurring information collection is also part of its forms workflow.
Australian Checks and System Handover
Tax Genie builds Australian client checks into the form and the review. It checks ABN, ACN and TFN formats and confirms a valid ABN against the Australian Business Register. A register match helps establish the entity details. Identity verification separately uses a document and selfie check, or certified documents for staff review.
For AML/CTF work, Tax Genie records beneficial owners and supports screening for politically exposed persons, sanctions and adverse media. Staff record the client risk determination and its reasoning. The risk register shows standing and the next review date alongside the onboarding records.
Engager’s Xama integration documents identity verification, sanctions and politically exposed person checks, plus client risk assessments. Its company-data examples use Companies House, and the integration is presented for UK practices.
Different Records Move Through Each Connection
Tax Genie sends approved client details into your tax software. It matches and updates Xero Partner Hub + Practice Management records after a field-by-field review, creates jobs and files completed documents to supported document systems.
Engager’s Xero page describes a connection to Xero accounting: two-way client details, invoice information and one-off invoice creation. That is a different destination from Xero Partner Hub + Practice Management, formerly Xero Practice Manager. A connection bearing the Xero name does not establish the same supported records.
Engager’s TaxCalc page documents two-way client-data sync and sending finished accounts and tax returns from TaxCalc into Engager folders. It lists using Engager forms to populate TaxCalc as a later phase. Its UK tax-software connection therefore has a different scope from the form-to-tax-software handover Australian practices get with Tax Genie.
Costs and the Complete Client File
Engager’s pricing page bases its monthly subscription on client numbers and includes unlimited users and its listed features. Two-way Xero client sync is an optional paid addition, and SMS messages are charged separately. Adding staff and adding clients therefore have different cost effects.
Tax Genie includes generous usage, including identity and AML/CTF checks, in its price. Its checked forms and automatic follow-up also reduce the time staff spend chasing answers and typing details again.
Switching takes staff time as well as a subscription. Keep the existing signed engagement letters and client documents, map the fields you need and assign responsibility for outstanding requests. Tax Genie can import existing clients from CSV. Review matched records before updating your tax software so a new request does not create a second client record.
