Income and Deductions

This tax calculator estimates an individual’s annual tax and compares it with tax already withheld. Assessable income less allowable deductions gives taxable income. The estimate disregards cents in taxable income, then applies the selected year’s tax rules.

Enter assessable employment income, interest and other taxable amounts. For a sole trader, enter net business profit after allowable costs and avoid deducting those costs again. Calculate net capital gains and partnership or trust amounts separately before adding their assessable amounts.

A deduction reduces taxable income. A non-refundable tax offset reduces income tax after that calculation, down to zero. The calculator includes the low income tax offset automatically for residents. Enter only additional non-refundable offsets in the other tax settings.

Cash receipts count in assessable income too. A sole trader’s ABN creates no separate tax rate. Subcontractors, delivery drivers, Uber drivers and day traders can enter established net business income. The calculator does not decide whether the activity is a business or obtain platform records.

For example, a fictional delivery driver has $91,245 of business receipts, including cash. Their accountant establishes $10,000 of allowable business costs. Enter the $81,245 net profit as income and keep those costs out of deductions. With $1,200 of other eligible deductions, the default example below applies.

Enter an eligible charitable donation separately to compare income tax before and after the deduction. Adding a $1,000 donation to the example reduces income tax from $14,802 to $14,502, a $300 saving. The donation is not a matching $1,000 refund.

This small-business estimate covers an individual. For a company’s own taxable income, use the company tax calculator instead.

Tax Withheld and the Refund Estimate

Tax already withheld is a credit against the estimated liability. Increasing that credit increases the refund or reduces the amount payable. It leaves the underlying income tax and Medicare levy unchanged.

In this fictional 2025-26 return, an adult resident has $81,245 of assessable income and $1,200 of deductions. Taxable income is $80,045. Income tax is $14,802 and the ordinary single-adult Medicare levy is $1,601.

The total liability is $16,402 before any study loan repayment. A withholding credit of $18,000 produces an estimated refund of $1,598. With no withholding credit, the same return has an estimated $16,402 payable.

Use the visible fictional sample to change an income, deduction or withholding figure and compare the result. Tax already withheld accepts PAYG withholding and instalment credits. Enter study loan withholding separately and exclude it from the main withholding figure.

For a PAYG withholding variation workpaper, enter expected annual income, supported deductions and credits. The estimate shows liability and the possible refund or amount payable. The ATO determines an actual variation. Follow the PAYG withholding variation application procedure after preparing the estimate.

Which Year and Residency Apply

Choose the full financial year before calculating. The calculator supports 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and each year from 2021-22 to 2026-27. A label such as 2026 can mean 2025-26 or 2026-27. Choose the period the return covers.

Each completed year uses its own income tax brackets, ordinary single-adult Medicare thresholds and low income offsets. The 2021-22 calculation includes the low and middle income tax offset. The temporary budget repair levy is included where applicable in 2014-15 to 2016-17.

The published 2026-27 income tax and HELP schedules are available. For that year, enter a separately calculated Medicare levy or select an exemption the client qualifies for. The calculator does not substitute another year’s Medicare threshold. Years absent from the selector are unsupported.

The resident setting assumes an adult who is an Australian resident for tax purposes for the full year. The foreign resident setting applies full-year foreign resident rates with no tax-free threshold, low income tax offset or Medicare levy.

Part-year residency and special rules for children need a separate calculation. A 482 visa alone does not establish tax residency. Tax residency depends on the client’s circumstances, not citizenship alone. The individual income tax schedules set the statutory rates.

Working holiday maker rates are available for the offered years from 2021-22 onward. Use that setting only for eligible working holiday maker income. Australian residents covered by a non-discrimination article can require ordinary resident rates. Mixed income and older working holiday maker years need a separate calculation. Establish Medicare eligibility separately.

NSW, QLD, Victoria and WA use the same federal individual income tax rates. Sydney and Melbourne have no separate personal income tax schedule. State payroll tax and annual land tax are separate calculations.

Reading the Result

Estimated amounts display as whole dollars after calculation.

The headline shows the estimated refund or amount payable after withholding. The figures below separate taxable income from income tax, Medicare levy and the study loan repayment. The marginal bracket shows the statutory income tax rate on the current bracket. The effective rate divides income tax after offsets by taxable income. Neither percentage includes Medicare or HELP.

This calculator applies other non-refundable offsets to income tax only. Foreign income tax offsets can also reduce Medicare levy and need a separate calculation.

The single-adult Medicare setting uses the ordinary low-income reduction. Choose a full exemption only when the client qualifies. For family reductions, seniors or a partial-year adjustment, enter a levy calculated separately under the Medicare levy rules.

This estimate excludes Medicare levy surcharge, refundable offsets, private health insurance rebate adjustments and other assessment adjustments. Review those items in your tax software before relying on the final return estimate. The lodged return and the ATO assessment determine the final outcome.

For a year-to-date projection, enter the months covered by income, ordinary deductions and withholding. Six months of $40,000 income, $600 deductions and $9,000 withholding projects to $80,000, $1,200 and $18,000 annually. Donation, super, offsets and repayment-income adjustments remain annual entries. This assumes the recurring amounts continue at the same pace.

The ATO Simple tax calculator estimates income tax on taxable income. Its income tax estimator considers a refund or debt. ASIC’s Moneysmart income tax calculator compares annual tax and pay after tax, using its stated assumptions. It excludes tax offsets, so a low-income comparison can differ even when brackets match. Match the financial year and Medicare settings before comparing these figures.

H&R Block’s public calculator estimates a resident’s annual refund using income, deductions and withholding, with additional HELP settings. Etax shows its estimate within a signed-in tax return. For a comparison, use the same 2025-26 income, deductions, offsets and HELP assumptions. Return preparation and lodgment are separate services. This calculator reads no provider or government account.

This free tax return calculator estimates annual arithmetic from your entries. An actual account balance, lodged-return status or myGov tax record requires the authorised ATO service. Missing income, offsets or deductions and final assessment adjustments can change a tax refund estimate.

Amounts stay in this browser page. The calculator sends no entered figures to Tax Genie or the ATO and saves none in browser storage.

HELP and HECS Loan Repayments

Choose Calculate under study loan repayment to apply the selected year’s published annual schedule. Enter the remaining debt, reportable fringe benefits, net investment losses, reportable employer super and exempt foreign employment income. The personal super deduction above is added back automatically. An assessable First Home Super Saver release is excluded from repayment income.

For 2025-26, repayment income of $80,000 produces a $1,950 compulsory HELP repayment before the debt cap. With only $500 of debt remaining, the estimate includes $500. The result shows study repayment less the separate withholding credit. A negative figure means that credit exceeds this study repayment component.

Earlier schedules apply a percentage to total repayment income. From 2025-26, the marginal schedule applies above its threshold, with the published whole-income rule at the top. The calculator caps the obligation at the supplied debt balance. Special reductions, hardship deferrals and overseas obligations need a separate assessment.

Study loan withholding contributes to the annual assessment credit. It is not a voluntary repayment already applied to the debt. Use a debt balance that includes adjustments already made to the account. This estimate does not forecast future indexation or a pay-period deduction.

Sole-Trader Tax With Super

Enter net sole-trader profit as income and an eligible personal super deduction in its separate field. With $80,000 net profit and a $5,000 personal deduction, 2025-26 taxable income is $75,000. Income tax is $13,288 and ordinary single-adult Medicare is $1,500 before study repayments.

Establish contribution eligibility and the available concessional cap before entering a deduction. Give the fund a valid notice of intent and receive its acknowledgement. Keep the contribution separate from business expenses and employer super. A deduction already included elsewhere must not be entered again. Super fund contributions tax and other super taxes are outside this individual return estimate.
