Choose ANZSIC or an ATO Business Code
An ANZSIC class has four digits. An ATO business industry code has five. Choose the classification requested by the form or agency before searching.
The Australian Business Register’s code definitions distinguish the two families. This ANZSIC code lookup searches the ABS class list separately from the ATO business industry code list. Each selection shows its edition and official source.
Choose ANZSIC to search ANZSIC 2006 Revision 2.0, or ATO to search Business Industry codes 2026. The tool keeps the complete published code, including leading zeros. Switching families keeps your search text and code prefix unchanged.
Search by the Main Activity
Search for what the client’s business does, then compare the published descriptions. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) uses a five-digit business industry code for relevant tax returns and schedules.
When a client carries on several activities, the ATO directs you to the activity with the highest gross income or smallest loss. Ask the client to separate the activities before choosing a code.
The example opens on bookkeeping in the ANZSIC family. It returns class 6932, Accounting Services, with Bookkeeping service among its published activities. Choose ATO with the same activity to see business industry code 69320, Accounting services.
Use the optional code prefix to narrow the search within the chosen family. A four-digit prefix can filter ATO results, but every returned ATO code still has five digits. In ANZSIC mode, a five-digit entry shows an error instead of removing a digit.
Keep leading zeros. In ANZSIC mode, 0111 finds Nursery Production (Under Cover). In ATO mode, 01110 finds the corresponding business industry code. Entering 1110 searches a different prefix in either family.
Compare Descriptions and Exclusions
Open a candidate to compare its labelled code, description and published activities. ANZSIC results also show the ABS class definition and exclusions. Related candidates stay in the chosen code family.
Read exclusions before choosing a code. Accounting services includes bookkeeping, while the ABS directs businesses mainly providing payroll processing, billing or record-keeping to Office Administrative Services, class 7291.
Published correspondence shows the other family’s codes only where the ATO spreadsheet’s class field agrees with the ABS class description. One ANZSIC class can have several ATO codes. The tool never creates correspondence by adding or removing a digit.
ATO candidates show ABS exclusions where that correspondence is supported. For other ATO candidates, use their published activity descriptions and the official ATO source. Record the client’s actual activity with the code requested by the registration or return.
The results use the ATO’s Business Industry codes 2026 and the ABS’s ANZSIC 2006 Revision 2.0. Search matches identify candidates for your comparison; they do not decide the client’s activity.
Activity and code searches stay on your device. The tool sends neither entry to a server and saves neither in browser storage or the page address. Reset example restores the bookkeeping search in ANZSIC mode and clears the code prefix.
