Remove a PDF Password

This free PDF password remover saves an unlocked copy using the password you already have. Your PDF and password stay in your browser.

  1. Choose the bank statement, ATO notice or other PDF you are authorised to unlock.
  2. Enter its open or permission password exactly as supplied, including any spaces.
  3. Select Remove password. The result lists the page count and restrictions removed.
  4. Select Download unlocked PDF, then open that copy to check every page before filing it.

The tool keeps existing page text and page sizes. It does not turn each page into an image, so selectable statement text remains available for extraction. Scanned pages remain scans.

Use PDFs up to 20 MB and 100 pages. A wrong password produces an error and no download. Certificate-protected files and digitally signed PDFs need a separate unlocked, unsigned copy from the sender. This tool does not recover forgotten passwords.

Open and Permission Passwords

An open password is required to view a PDF. A permission password controls actions such as printing or copying, even when the PDF opens without a prompt.

Enter the known open password for a protected statement, or the known permission password when the sender authorises removing those restrictions. The new copy has no password encryption. Its result names any printing or copying restrictions removed, along with other recorded restrictions.

Removing a password changes the file’s protection. It does not change who is authorised to use the client’s information. Keep the original document when your practice needs its original protection or evidence.

Keeping Unlocked Statements Safe

The unlocked copy downloads to the location your browser uses for saved files. Tax Genie receives no PDF contents or password. The tool uses no browser storage for them, and Clear file or leaving the page clears its working copy.

Save the checked statement in your practice’s approved client folder with access limited to the staff who need it. An unlocked file can be opened by anyone who obtains a copy.

Once the approved workpaper is saved and checked, delete redundant unlocked copies from Downloads and temporary working folders under your practice’s retention policy. Preserve records required by law or a retention hold. Clearing this page does not delete a downloaded file or copies synchronised elsewhere.
