Build the Process Map

This business process mapping tool draws the tasks, decisions and owners in your accounting work. Start with the fictional onboarding example or select Blank map to draw your own steps.

Add a node for each step, then choose its type and edit its wording. Start and end nodes mark the boundaries. A task names an action, such as Collect client details. A decision asks a question that changes the next step.

Choose From node and To node to draw a directed arrow. Add a connection label, then select Add connection. To change an existing arrow, choose it under Selected connection and select Save connection after editing.

Assign Each Handoff

Give each task an owner who can perform it. Use roles such as Client, Preparer or Reviewer so the map stays useful when staff change.

The example passes client details to the preparer’s Information complete? decision. The Yes exit leads to review. No leads to Missing information, owned by the client, before the details return for another check.

After review, Ready to accept? sends Yes to Client accepted. No passes questions to the preparer, then returns the work to the reviewer. The arrow between owners is the handoff.

Diagram checks flag an unconnected node and each decision exit without a label. They also identify tasks without owners and steps without an incoming or next connection. A clear check list describes the drawing’s connections. It does not establish that your practice has completed the work.

Keep the Map Readable

Drag a node to reposition it, or change its horizontal and vertical positions. You can also focus a node with Tab and move it with the arrow keys. Enter opens its wording field.

Fit diagram shows the full map. Zoom in makes labels larger, while Zoom out shows more of the drawing. Select a connection and use Branch earlier or Branch later to change its order in the drawing and text list.

The Tasks and connections list below the diagram contains every node, owner and labelled arrow. It updates with the drawing, so you can review the sequence without following the lines visually.

Export the Diagram

Download SVG saves the current diagram as a vector image. Print diagram opens your browser’s print options. Choose Save as PDF there if you need a PDF copy.

Save editable map downloads a JSON file containing the wording, owners, positions and connections. Use Reload editable map to open that file and continue editing. Keep the JSON file as well as the image because an SVG cannot be reloaded into this editor.

Labels and owners stay on your device. The page keeps your map while it is open, so save the editable file before leaving or reloading. Blank map and Onboarding example replace the current drawing.

The tool draws a process. It does not send reminders, collect client information or assign work in your tax software.
