To delete ChatGPT history, delete individual chats from their menus or use Delete all chats in Settings. Clear saved memory separately when client details are involved.

Delete One Chat or All Chats

Delete a single ChatGPT conversation from its chat menu. Confirm the account and workspace first. Deletion is permanent, so have your incident lead record any necessary evidence before removing client-related chats.

Web and Desktop

  1. Open the chat history. On desktop, show the sidebar if it is hidden.
  2. Open the conversation’s more options menu.
  3. Select Delete and confirm.
  4. Refresh the history and confirm that the conversation has disappeared.

For several selected chats, repeat these steps for each conversation you intend to remove. This avoids deleting unrelated conversations with the account-wide action.

iPhone and Android

  1. Open the app’s history menu.
  2. Press and hold the conversation title.
  3. Select Delete and complete the confirmation.
  4. Return to history and confirm the chat is gone.

All Chats

  1. Open Settings, then Data controls.
  2. Select Delete all chats.
  3. Read the confirmation and complete deletion.
  4. Refresh your history and check the result.

Bulk deletion can include project chats. Archive all chats only hides conversations. OpenAI’s chat deletion instructions explain both actions.

If a chat remains, check that you deleted it in the same account and workspace you are viewing. Search archived chats too. An empty sidebar alone does not establish that all saved information is gone.

Clear ChatGPT Memory

ChatGPT can store saved memories separately from the conversation that supplied them. Delete the memory and its source chat to remove both copies from those account features.

  1. Open Settings, then Personalization and Memory.
  2. Open Manage or Saved memories, depending on the options shown.
  3. Delete the relevant memory, or clear all saved memories using the available deletion option.
  4. If you have a memory summary, remove the information there too. Where shown, Delete and turn off memory removes the summary’s remembered information and switches Memory off.
  5. Turn Reference chat history off if you want information remembered from past chats removed.
  6. Delete the chats containing those details, including archived chats.
  7. Reopen Memory settings and confirm the relevant entries have gone.

Switching saved memory off leaves existing saved memories stored. Turning Reference chat history off schedules remembered information for deletion within 30 days, while leaving the original chats in history.

Menu options depend on your account and workspace. OpenAI’s memory guidance explains the available versions. Logs of deleted saved memories can remain for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.

Delete a ChatGPT Account

Deleting your ChatGPT account permanently removes access through that account to OpenAI services, including the API. For a managed Business or Enterprise account, contact the organisation because self-service account deletion is unavailable within those workspaces.

For a personal account on the web:

  1. Sign in and open your account menu.
  2. Select Settings, then Account.
  3. Select Delete beside Delete account.
  4. Enter the account email or phone number and type DELETE when prompted.
  5. Select Permanently delete my account.
  6. Complete verification and look for the deletion confirmation.

On iOS, open account settings, then Data controls and Delete account. On Android, use Settings, Data controls and Delete OpenAI account. Older Android versions can show Delete Account. Complete the confirmation shown.

If sign-in fails, submit a verified request through the OpenAI Privacy Portal. Returning to the chat screen after signing in does not confirm deletion. OpenAI’s account deletion guide gives the recovery route.

A deleted account cannot be restored. You can create a new account with the same email address after 30 days if the old account was fully deleted. Its chats and memories do not return.

Account deletion cancels subscriptions billed directly by ChatGPT. Cancel an Apple subscription through Apple before deleting. For Google Play, check and cancel the store subscription. OpenAI’s subscription instructions explain each route.

What OpenAI Keeps After You Delete

OpenAI schedules deleted chats for permanent deletion within 30 days. Exceptions apply where content was already de-identified and separated from your account, or longer retention is required for security or legal obligations.

A chat disappearing from history confirms removal from your account view. It does not prove that every retained copy has already been erased.

OpenAI says the broad court order requiring indefinite retention of new consumer chats has ended. It still retains a limited historical set of 2025 data under legal obligations. Its litigation update explains the remaining preservation.

Temporary chats can also be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes. They are not an immediate-erasure option.

Files can outlast the chat. Delete separately saved copies from Library or Space, and check files stored in projects or custom GPTs. OpenAI’s chat and file retention policy separates these storage locations.

Deleting a conversation also leaves the original information in a connected service untouched. Disconnecting that service stops future access but leaves conversations that already used it subject to their own deletion steps.

If Client Data Was in the Chats

Treat client data entered into an unapproved account as an incident requiring assessment. Deleting the chat is a containment step. The practice still needs to decide what happened and whether notification is required.

  1. Stop further uploads and tell the practice’s incident lead.
  2. Record which account and plan were used, what information was entered and which clients were affected. Record any shared links or files without spreading extra copies.
  3. Record the deletion actions and any confirmation. Ask OpenAI about retention or access where that affects the assessment.
  4. Assess whether disclosure was authorised, whether serious harm is likely and whether remedial action prevents that harm.
  5. Record the notification decision and the person responsible for follow-up.

For entities covered by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, an eligible breach requires notification to the regulator and affected individuals. Take all reasonable steps to finish a suspected-breach assessment within 30 calendar days.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner’s response guide explains the assessment and notification requirements. Use your practice’s data breach response plan to allocate the work.

Before staff resume client work, specify the approved account and permitted information in the practice’s AI policy. Compare ChatGPT plans for client work and give staff a clear escalation route for another accidental upload.
