Class Super Training for Practice Staff 2026
Train your team to prepare a Class Super fund file, check source records and hand exceptions to a reviewer before independent client work.

Class Super training works best as a supervised fund-file exercise. Give new staff a fictional source pack, check their entries against it and require a reviewer handover before they work independently on client funds.
Set the Role Before the Training
Set the trainee’s task and access before opening a fund. The first outcome is modest: they can locate the correct fund, reconcile the supplied records and explain unresolved exceptions to a reviewer.
Use an isolated practice file with fictional records. Nominate the supervisor who can authorise entries and resolve questions. Agree which actions the trainee can perform, which need approval and where the exercise stops. Leave lodgment, client invitations and changes to business-wide settings outside this first exercise.
Class’s user permissions guidance gives Fund Administrators read and write access across the business by default. Access Controllers manage user access. Restrictions to a brand or specific entities must be set at the initial invitation, so arrange the training scope before inviting the trainee. Restricted access also removes some business-level functions.
Use a named account with the agreed role. Have the Access Controller confirm the trainee can open the isolated file without exposing unrelated client funds. A Fund Auditor role is read-only, so it does not suit an exercise that requires entries.
Software access and professional authority are separate. Learning to record a transaction gives no authority to provide SMSF financial advice, sign an independent audit opinion or lodge a return. The supervisor retains the practice’s approval steps for those activities.
Build the Practice Fund’s Source Pack
Give the trainee enough evidence to explain every opening balance and sample transaction. Use this fictional pack as a starting point, with dates and reference fields completed consistently by the supervisor.
- A fund summary identifying the training fund, its reporting period and its corporate trustee.
- A fictional deed extract and trustee record showing the trustee company acting for that fund, with two member records labelled Member A and Member B.
- An approved opening trial balance and member balances, with a bank opening balance of $20,000 and no opening holding in the sample security.
- A bank statement covering the exercise, including an employer contribution of $1,000 for Member A, a $100 administration expense and a $2,000 investment purchase.
- Employer remittance evidence, an expense invoice and a purchase contract note showing 100 units at $20 each, with no brokerage in this simplified example.
- A closing investment statement showing 100 units, plus an evidence index and a blank exceptions list.
These fictional amounts let the supervisor check the trainee’s work against a known result. The supervisor supplies the expense’s approved GST and income-tax treatment separately, so the trainee does not infer it from the bank description.
Before importing anything, have the trainee compare the fund and trustee names across the deed extract, bank statement and investment evidence. Check that the account ownership records identify the trustee acting for the same fund. Match the contribution to the correct member. Record an inconsistent name or missing ownership evidence as an exception before proceeding.
Complete client-form details identify the fund and its trustees and members. Tax Genie collects client and entity details through guided forms and follows up missing answers. The fund file also needs bank statements and investment evidence to support its accounting records.
Work Through a Supervised Fund Exercise
Work from the source pack to the recorded transaction, then check the result before moving on. Class’s fund processing guide describes cash imports, investment events and transaction matching as separate tasks.
- Locate the assigned training fund. Compare its identity and reporting period with the pack. Confirm that the starting bank balance is $20,000 and the sample security has no opening units. Stop if the opening position differs.
- Review the cash records already loaded. Compare each line with the bank statement before importing a missing record through the supervisor’s approved CSV or file-loading method. Check for overlapping imports or feeds to avoid recording the same cash movement twice.
- Review the $1,000 employer contribution. At fund level, open Transactions, Member income, then Member Contribution if a new event is needed. Use the receipt date and Member A, then enter the employer mandatory amount supported by the remittance. Check that the member and contribution total agree with that evidence.
- Record the $100 expense using Transactions, Fund Expenses. Select the approved expense type and enter the fee date, gross amount and description. Compare the GST and deduction settings with the supervisor’s instructions before saving. Check the event total against the invoice and the bank withdrawal.
- Review the security purchase. If no acquisition event exists, use Transactions, Investment - Buy, then Listed Security Acquisition. Select the supervisor’s sample holding and enter the contract date, settlement date, 100 units and $2,000 consideration. Confirm the holding increases to 100 units and the event agrees with the contract note.
- Match the cash lines to the corresponding events in Transactions, Match Transactions. Review any proposed automatic match before accepting it. Each bank movement must be supported by the correct event, with no duplicate event created to force a match.
- Reconcile the exercise period. The expected bank closing balance is $18,900: $20,000 plus $1,000, less $100 and $2,000. Compare the recorded holding with the investment statement’s 100 units. Investigate any difference before handing the file over.
Class documents the contribution fields in Member Contributions, expense settings in Fund Expenses and purchase inputs in Listed Security Acquisition.
The contribution’s source changes its treatment. The Australian Taxation Office treats employer contributions as concessional contributions. A personal payment needs separate evidence of its character and any deduction notice requirements. An unexplained deposit must stay on the exceptions list until the supervisor resolves its classification.
Stop at an unexplained balance or unsupported tax setting. Record the amount, evidence reference and question for the supervisor. A balancing adjustment without evidence defeats the exercise.
Prepare the Reviewer’s Handover
Hand over a file that another staff member can follow without reconstructing your work. Run the Cash Reconciliation report for the exercise period and compare its deposits and withdrawals with the supplied bank statement.
Use Balance Reconciliation for holdings connected to feeds or registries. Select the same as-at date as the evidence. A feed balance for a different date does not explain the exercise’s closing units. Where the fictional file has no connected feed, compare the recorded units with the supplied investment statement directly.
Include the cash reconciliation, relevant account reports and the Exceptions Report. Add a short record of entries created or changed, with evidence attached or clearly indexed. Give every unresolved item an owner and next action. A software report supports the review, but it does not establish an audit conclusion.
First Checks for Common Training Problems
| Symptom | First diagnostic check | Who resolves it |
|---|---|---|
| Expected feed data is absent | Check the account, feed status and period covered. Consult Class’s provider status guidance before importing replacement records. | The Feeds Administrator checks activation or provider issues with the supervisor. |
| Cash or units do not agree | Compare the same reporting date, opening balance and source lines. Look for a missing or duplicate entry and settlement timing. | The trainee documents the difference. The supervisor approves the correction. |
| A menu or fund is unavailable | Compare the assigned role and entity restrictions with the task. | The Access Controller checks access. The trainee keeps using their own account. |
The handover passes when the bank closes at $18,900, the sample holding has 100 units and each movement traces to evidence. An unresolved classification can remain open only when the reviewer sees its amount, owner and required decision.
Use Class Learning for the Next Task
Choose the next learning activity from the errors the supervised exercise reveals. Class Essentials Online is aimed at new Class Super users learning administration. Use it for a trainee who needs the basic sequence before another supervised exercise.
The official learning pathways require login before selecting a role. Match the pathway to the task instead of assigning every course.
| Gap revealed by the exercise | Learning to use | Follow-up task |
|---|---|---|
| Staff access is too broad or required menus are missing | Access Controller pathway and user permissions guidance | Confirm the training invitation and entity scope. |
| Source records or transition balances are incomplete | Transition Administrator pathway | Reconcile the opening evidence before loading another file. |
| Feed coverage or authorities are unclear | Feeds Administrator pathway and feed guidance | Explain one missing-data period and the approved recovery route. |
| Entries or matching need correction | Funds Administrator pathway and the relevant transaction help article | Prepare a second small fund exercise with different amounts. |
| Review questions remain unresolved | Fund Tax Agent or Fund Auditor pathway, according to the reviewer’s actual role | Trace one exception from source evidence to the reviewer’s decision. |
For the second exercise, change the amounts and include a deliberate missing document. The supervisor checks that the trainee spots the gap, avoids unsupported entries and produces a traceable handover. Record the supervisor’s approval and the specific work the trainee can undertake independently. Keep review for work outside that scope.
Course completion records software learning. Professional bodies decide whether an activity meets their continuing professional development requirements, so keep the course details and learning record for that separate assessment.
One client form. One finished return.
Your client completes one guided form. Tax Genie checks it, chases mistakes and sends the details to your engagement letter and tax software.
