Choose the Applicable Income Year
This Division 296 tax calculator estimates the additional tax for 2026-27 from supplied earnings and the year-end super balance. Another year returns Unavailable. The enacted realised-earnings approach replaces the earlier unrealised-growth proposal.
The enacted transitional rules use the closing balance alone for 2026-27. Later years use the higher opening or closing balance and indexed thresholds. This calculator does not apply the first-year method to later years.
Enter Balances and Relevant Earnings
Enter the established total super balance across your client’s interests. Obtain the relevant earnings allocated from fund records, including any required capital-gains adjustments. An increase in account value is not the relevant earnings figure.
The model accepts a completed non-negative earnings total. Negative fund earnings are taken as nil before allocation. It does not value defined benefits, allocate fund earnings or calculate transitional capital-gains adjustments. Select Special treatment unresolved if any required treatment remains unsettled.
Calculate the Threshold Components
The calculator rounds each balance proportion to two percentage decimals before allocating positive earnings. The first proportion is the balance above $3 million divided by the full balance. The second uses $10 million.
Under the tax imposition rules, 15% applies to the first earnings component and another 10% applies to the second. Earnings above $10 million therefore bear both components. The headline is their sum, displayed in whole dollars.
Compare With the Expected Assessment
In a fictional 2026-27 case, the closing balance is $12 million and established earnings are $600,000. The rounded proportions are 75% and 16.67%. Allocated earnings are $450,000 and $100,020. The tax components are $67,500 and $10,002, producing $77,502.
Keeping earnings at $600,000 and changing the same year’s closing balance to $8 million gives 62.5% above $3 million. The $375,000 earnings component produces $56,250 tax. The higher-threshold component is zero.
Child income-stream recipients, qualifying structured settlement contributions and death during 2026-27 have selectable exemptions. Foreign, excluded, non-complying and departure cases require separate treatment. Select Special treatment unresolved for those cases or for a defined benefit without established statutory figures.
Reconcile the entered totals and exemption facts with your client’s assessment records. The estimate excludes payment deferrals, debt-account interest and ordinary fund tax.
