Metadata Remover for PDFs and Photos
Check hidden PDF and photo metadata, then download a separate copy on your device.
Check and Remove PDF Metadata
This free metadata remover checks a local PDF or photo and creates a separate copy in your browser. Files stay on your device. You can use it without an account.
Select a PDF and choose Check metadata. The metadata checker lists stored document properties, including author, title and producer when present. It also counts XMP metadata streams and lists comment authors and text.
Keep the removal options selected to remove document properties, XMP metadata and comment annotations. You can retain a category by clearing its checkbox. Select Remove selected data, review the remaining fields and download the copy.
For example, a PDF with an author name and a title displays those fields before removal. Removing document properties clears both from the copy. Keeping Comments and markup selected also removes page notes and review marks.
The PDF metadata remover writes a new file instead of appending a revision to the original. It keeps the page content and ordinary links. Document-level extras, such as bookmarks and attachments, are not transferred. Forms, signed PDFs and password-protected PDFs are unsupported.
PDFs can be up to 20 MB and 200 pages. The checker covers the listed property and annotation fields. It does not inspect every application’s private data or metadata inside embedded page images.
Photos and Scanned Receipts
Receipt photos can carry exchangeable image file format (EXIF) data alongside the picture. Camera details and capture times can identify how a photo was made. GPS tags can reveal where it was taken.
Choose a JPEG or PNG to use the image metadata checker. It lists supported EXIF fields, including GPS latitude and longitude when readable. It also identifies stored text and XMP blocks. An unreadable tag can remain inside a detected block without appearing as a separate field.
The image metadata remover creates a PNG from the decoded pixels and strips source EXIF and text metadata. All source metadata is removed together, including GPS location. The photo’s displayed orientation is retained. The copy can be larger than the original JPEG.
Images can be up to 20 MB, 40 megapixels and 16,000 pixels per side. HEIC, GIF, TIFF and video files are unsupported. PNG output can contain standard colour information and browser-generated resolution details.
A receipt saved inside a PDF follows the PDF process. Metadata inside that embedded photo remains outside this check. Clean the original photo before adding it to a PDF when its EXIF data needs removal.
What Metadata Removal Does Not Fix
Removing metadata leaves the words and pictures on the page. A client’s address printed on a receipt remains visible. Selectable text, OCR text and details inside an image also remain.
Use the PDF redaction tool to remove visible client details from a PDF. A drawn rectangle or an unapplied redaction mark can leave the original text recoverable.
Metadata removal is not a complete document sanitisation check. Inspect the downloaded file’s pages and properties before sending it. Change a revealing filename separately, and check that the intended recipient is correct.
Clear file removes the tool’s file and results. Leaving the page clears them, including when you return through browser history. Downloads stay on your device until you delete them. Your browser controls when memory is released.
