Crypto Tax Software for Accountants 2026

Which crypto tax software fits your client’s wallets? Compare Australian reports, imports and accountant access before choosing a client plan.

Choose crypto tax software by the client’s records: Koinly suits exchange-led portfolios and practice-managed reports. Summ suits portfolios needing guided reconciliation and documented change records. Both need complete wallet history before their Australian reports can support your return workpaper.

Crypto Tax Software by Client Portfolio

The best crypto tax software for an Australian client is the option that supports their actual exchanges and transactions, with reports you can review. A simple exchange account and a staking portfolio create different work even when their transaction counts match.

Koinly for Exchange-Led Client Records

Koinly suits a practice managing exchange and wallet portfolios through one accountant account. It supports exchange connections, CSV imports and wallet data, with separate client portfolios. A client using one supported exchange has fewer transfer pairs to resolve than a client moving assets across several wallets.

For a multi-wallet investor, Koinly’s transfer matching and manual merge tools help reconstruct movements between accounts. Keep the original exchange files and the reviewed report together. Missing acquisition history still needs reconstruction, even when the closing balance agrees with the wallet.

Koinly’s Australian help guide identifies an ATO Report and a Complete tax report. Its practice licensing can cover reports across years for an assigned portfolio. That suits catch-up work, but the individual purchase model is different. Keep the client’s legal owner separate from other entities, including a self-managed super fund.

Summ for Guided Reconciliation

Summ suits a practice that wants a review queue for incomplete history and unmatched movements. Its accountant portal manages client accounts, while the Review page separates missing prices, missing purchases and unmatched transfers. Those warnings give staff a concrete starting point for a portfolio with many wallets.

Summ is the current name of the product previously called Crypto Tax Calculator. That former name does not identify the separate Crypto Tax Calculator Australia service. This comparison evaluates Summ’s own accountant offering.

For staking or other complex activity, Summ’s categories and Australian capital gains and income reports separate the amounts requiring review. Its Audit Report records imported data and changes, including tax settings. Advanced reports and some transaction features depend on the plan, so the lowest transaction allowance alone does not establish suitability.

For NFT tax software, Summ supports custom CSV imports when wallet sync misses an NFT transaction. Retain the collection, token ID, contract address and transaction hash alongside the acquisition record. Unsupported chains or contract designs can require this manual work. Koinly also lists NFT support, so compare the client’s actual NFT imports before choosing either product.

Match the Choice to the Client

Neither connection counts nor a generic international report establish the best crypto tax software in Australia. The deciding evidence is the client’s supported history and the Australian output needed for their entity.

Reconcile Every Wallet Before the Report

Import the client’s complete history before correcting the current year. Earlier purchases support the cost of assets sold later, including assets moved from a closed exchange.

Koinly accepts exchange API connections and CSV files. Summ supports read-only exchange connections, exchange files and its custom CSV format. An API connection can retrieve less history than the client’s account contains. Record each source’s covered period and use source exports to fill the missing period.

A wallet import brings crypto records into the portfolio software. An accounting connection sends reviewed entries into accounting software. Koinly reserves its accounting-platform connection for Business accounts. Summ’s documented Xero connection requires a Business Plan and account mapping before export. Neither distinction makes a portfolio report an automatically lodged return.

Fictional Own-Wallet Transfer

An individual investor sends 1 ETH from an exchange to their own wallet. The wallet receives 0.998 ETH and the network fee is 0.002 ETH. Keep the transaction hash, both wallet records and evidence that the investor owns both accounts.

The ATO distinguishes a transfer with continuing ownership from a disposal. Crypto spent on the network fee has its own capital gains consequences. The fee needs review even when the transferred holding stays with the same taxpayer.

In Koinly, a withdrawal and deposit can merge into a transfer when their details meet its matching rules. Summ flags unmatched Send and Receive entries for review. Fix the source of a timestamp or amount discrepancy before treating two entries as the same movement.

For either product, keep a correction log with the original entry, revised entry and reason. Record who reviewed it and the source file or transaction hash. Summ’s Audit Report adds a product-generated change record. A report labelled audit does not replace the practitioner’s explanation of why the correction is right.

Review Australian Tax Reports

Select the Australian reporting settings and the correct entity before accepting a report total. A country setting determines calculation assumptions. It does not decide the client’s tax position.

Koinly’s ATO Report includes capital gains reporting, while its Complete tax report includes income detail. Its Australian guidance distinguishes those outputs, including their treatment of the capital gains tax discount. Keep disposal detail alongside the summary so you can inspect the acquisition cost and proceeds behind each gain.

Summ’s ATO MyTax Report separates capital gains and other income and records the settings used to generate it. Summ also documents an Australian Trading Stock Report. Its individual myTax guidance excludes the specific requirements of companies, trusts and super funds. Choose the entity’s reporting treatment separately from the individual-report layout.

Fictional Reward From Source to Workpaper

An individual investor receives a staking reward worth $120 when derived. The wallet import labels it as an ordinary incoming transfer. The practitioner matches the entry to the reward statement and changes its category to staking income, with the $120 valuation supported by a price record.

Koinly documents a Reward tag for a staking receipt. Summ’s Australian reporting guidance places staking rewards in its income reporting. In either product, the accepted workpaper records $120 of income from this receipt, with the source statement and the classification explanation attached. This is an illustration, not an observed software result.

The ATO’s staking guidance treats qualifying staking rewards as ordinary income when received. A later disposal requires a separate gain or loss calculation. Preserve the acquisition value as well as the income entry, so the reward does not become an unexplained zero-cost asset later.

Resolve investor versus trading-business treatment, beneficial ownership and any discount entitlement from the client’s facts. Review fees and contract transactions on their actual terms. Apply prior-year capital losses alongside the client’s other assets in the return workpaper, without counting a software discount twice.

When reviewed disposal inputs need a separate estimate, the capital gains tax calculator makes the entered assumptions visible. The portfolio history remains the evidence for those inputs. Choose your tax software for the subsequent return work, then reconcile the accepted portfolio totals to that workpaper.

Share Access Without Sharing Credentials

Invite the accountant through the product’s access settings and keep the client’s exchange sign-in private. The client authorises the exchange connection or supplies the export, under the agreed engagement scope.

Koinly lets a portfolio owner invite an accountant or team member. That invitation gives full editing rights, including adding or deleting transactions and wallets. The invited person cannot invite other users or retrieve the stored API secret. Its accountant platform also supports practice team members and portfolio assignments.

Summ’s accountant sends the invitation and the client accepts it. The accountant can then view and edit transactions and adjust tax settings. The client can revoke access through Permissions. The practice’s Workspace Settings separately manages staff invitations and revokes team access.

Use read-only exchange permissions and leave trading and withdrawal permissions disabled. Reading public wallet history needs an address, never the wallet’s recovery phrase or private signing credentials. Record which person approved the connection and which portfolio receives it.

Agree whether the client or practice holds the paid plan before creating accounts. Record every manual change in the engagement file, with a reviewer where needed. At handover, the account owner removes the practice’s portfolio access, the practice removes departing staff and the client revokes unused exchange connections at the exchange.

Compare Client Plans and Leaving Costs

Compare the allowance against the client’s complete imported history and the reports the engagement needs. For free crypto tax software, Koinly provides portfolio tracking and a tax-summary preview before payment. Downloading its tax report requires a paid plan. A free portfolio view does not include the same report rights as a paid plan.

Koinly’s individual plans sell reports for a selected tax year, with transaction tiers and repeat downloads for that purchased year. Its accountant licences instead attach to a portfolio and permit all-year reporting during the licence term. A practice handling several catch-up years must compare that model with separate individual-year purchases.

Summ uses annual subscriptions with access to supported financial years while subscribed. Its transaction allowance counts across years. The Australian client table has tiers from 100 transactions through larger portfolios, while advanced reports have their own plan restrictions. A client with few current-year trades can still need a higher tier because of their earlier history.

For the single-exchange client, compare report access and the payer. For the multi-wallet client, allow for the transaction count after imports and reconciliation. For the staking client, include the required transaction features and advanced reports before comparing the plan’s cost.

Koinly sells Expert Review as additional data-reconciliation help, with separate purchases for years requiring review. Summ also has a Done-For-You reconciliation service. Allow for that service separately from software access and the practice’s tax advice. Reconciliation help does not decide the client’s tax treatment.

Summ’s practice billing supports subscriptions paid by the practice or by the client. Cancelling a subscription and revoking an accountant’s access are separate actions. Record who handles each action, and retain the invoice’s tax treatment with the engagement costs.

Before changing products or cancelling, retain:

  • Original exchange exports and wallet histories, including closed accounts.
  • Reviewed transaction exports, acquisition costs and remaining holdings.
  • Correction explanations, supporting files and the tax settings used.
  • Capital gains and income reports, with the final workpaper reconciliation.
  • Entity ownership records and the list of connections and users to remove.

Carry the supported opening holdings and acquisition records into the next year. Complete the handover while report access remains available, then remove access under the agreed engagement terms.
