Enter the Fund Components
This superannuation withdrawal tax calculator estimates tax withheld and the net payout from supplied benefit components. Enter the payment’s tax-free component and each taxable element separately. A taxed source and an untaxed source have different rates.
Choose the payment year and age when paid. Ordinary and TPD modes cover Australian resident member lump sums with a TFN supplied. Selecting Yes confirms those facts. Death benefits, terminal medical condition payments, small-balance exemptions, rollovers and income streams require a separate calculation. Choose Other to leave those benefits uncalculated.
Tax on the Super Withdrawal
For supported member payments below age 60, withholding is 22% on the taxed element. The untaxed element attracts 32% within the remaining untaxed plan cap and 47% above it. From age 60, the taxed element attracts zero and the within-cap untaxed rate is 17%.
The cap is $1,935,000 for 2026-27 and $1,865,000 for 2025-26. Earlier untaxed benefits from the same plan reduce it. Rates include Medicare levy. The calculation follows the super lump sum withholding schedule. Withholding is rounded to whole dollars. Component estimates round independently for display.
TPD Benefit Components
A total and permanent disability (TPD) insurance payment does not by itself establish a disability super benefit. Two legally qualified medical practitioners must certify that ill health makes the member unlikely ever to work in a job matching their education, training or experience. Selecting Yes also confirms those certificates.
This TPD calculation supports taxed-source lump sums before the disability adjustment. Enter the fund’s service days, incapacity-to-retirement days and any overlap. Multiply the whole benefit by retirement days and divide by the combined periods, counting overlapping days once. This gives the extra tax-free amount. Add this to the existing tax-free amount, capped at the benefit. The remaining amount is taxable.
The last retirement day is generally age 65, with employment-specific exceptions. Use the fund’s service-period facts under the ATO’s disability component rules. An already adjusted statement must use Ordinary mode to avoid applying the uplift twice.
Reconcile With Fund Records
In the fictional default statement, a 58-year-old receives $20,000 tax-free and an $80,000 taxed element. Estimated withholding is $17,600 and the net payout is $82,400. Entering that $80,000 as untaxed instead produces $25,600 withholding, explaining an $8,000 difference from the original statement.
Reconcile the payment year, age and component classifications before comparing tax withheld. Ordinary withholding can differ from final annual tax because the return applies the client’s income and tax offsets. A tax estimate does not establish a condition of release or approve an insurance claim.
Departing Australia Super Payments
DASP mode applies separate final-tax rates. The tax-free component attracts zero. Ordinary DASP rates are 35% on the taxed element and 45% on the untaxed element. Working holiday maker (WHM) rates are 65% on both taxable elements, as the ATO’s DASP instructions explain.
For DASP, Yes confirms an eligible former temporary resident has left Australia and holds no active Australian visa. Establish nationality and residency exclusions through the ATO’s DASP rules. The calculator does not decide eligibility or submit an application.
Establish the WHM classification for each fund. Where a payment includes contributions attributable to a WHM visa, the WHM rate applies across its taxable elements, including amounts earned under other visas. Unknown classification produces no estimate.
Withdrawal and TPD Components
For a fictional TPD example, retain the default $100,000 benefit and age 58. Enter 4,000 service days, 3,000 retirement days and zero overlap. The adjusted tax-free component is $62,857 and the taxable component is $37,143. Estimated withholding is $8,171, leaving $91,829. Internally, adjusted components are rounded to cents.
A fictional ordinary DASP with $20,000 tax-free, $80,000 taxed and $10,000 untaxed produces $32,500 tax and $77,500 net. WHM classification changes tax to $58,500 and net to $51,500. Fees and currency conversion are excluded.
