Redundancy Pay Calculator

Estimate gross redundancy and reconcile notice, unpaid wages and leave.

Employment and entitlement

Employment system

NSW or Victoria alone does not identify the employment system.

Entitlement basis

Use established terms for state rules, award schemes or greater entitlements.

Select an established exception; industry schemes and insolvency can change it.

Count eligible continuous service, including any worked notice, once.

Ordinary hours at base pay, excluding loadings, allowances and overtime.

Notice and unpaid wages

An extra NES week applies over age 45 with at least two years of service.

Use service at the notice date, before the notice period starts.

Include amounts the employee would earn during the unworked notice.

Worked notice reduces pay in lieu; only unpaid hours enter wages below.

Hourly rate for ordinary wages and annual leave before separate loading.

Include unpaid worked notice here once. Exclude wages already paid.

Leave and additions

Use the loading payable under the applicable terms; enter 0 if none.

Enter the established gross entitlement under the applicable leave rules.

Extra gross dollars only. Exclude all amounts already included elsewhere.

Redundancy Entitlement

This redundancy pay calculator adds gross redundancy, unworked notice, unpaid ordinary wages and unused leave. Select the employment system and entitlement basis first. The automatic calculation uses the National Employment Standards (NES).

The NES redundancy scale pays eligible employees four to 16 weeks of base pay, depending on continuous service. At 10 years, the scale falls to 12 weeks. The table beside the result marks your service band. Partial years select a band without adding a fraction of another band’s payment.

Base weekly pay covers ordinary hours and excludes allowances, loadings, bonuses and overtime. The Fair Work redundancy guidance explains the scale and the different schemes in some awards.

Most employers with fewer than 15 employees are exempt from NES redundancy pay. Count associated entities and regular, systematic casuals. Employees being dismissed still count. Downsizing around insolvency can preserve redundancy obligations. Select the small business exception only when that exemption applies.

Casuals, apprentices and employees whose fixed period ends have NES exceptions. Other exclusions and industry schemes require the applicable terms. The Fair Work exceptions guidance helps identify the correct basis.

For NSW or Victoria employment, identify the employment system and instrument before choosing a scale. A state alone does not establish the entitlement. State-system cases and award or agreement schemes use Established terms. Enter the confirmed total redundancy and notice weeks. The tool does not calculate a state or award scale.

Use Established terms for a greater contractual entitlement or an approved reduction. Enter any extra contractual dollars separately, excluding amounts already included in the weeks. Service at termination includes eligible worked notice once. Service when notice was given belongs in its separate field.

Notice and Final Ordinary Pay

NES notice starts at one week for service up to one year. It rises to two weeks above one year, three above three years and four above five years. Employees over 45 with at least two years of service when notice is given receive another week.

Pay in lieu uses full pay for the hours the employee would have worked during the unworked notice. This can include allowances and other amounts excluded from redundancy base pay. Enter a representative full weekly amount for the actual notice period.

Deduct notice actually worked from the required notice to calculate unworked weeks. Include unpaid hours from worked notice in ordinary earnings once. Wages already paid stay outside the final payment. The Fair Work notice fact sheet explains notice rules and exceptions.

The small business redundancy exemption leaves notice payable. Casual and fixed-period exceptions remove automatic NES notice. An apprentice usually retains notice. Industry-specific notice arrangements use Established terms.

Leave in the Final Payment

Unused annual leave equals the entered balance in hours multiplied by the hourly wages and leave rate. Loading is a separate percentage of that leave amount. Enter the loading that would have been payable during employment, including zero where none applies.

The Fair Work final-pay guidance includes wages owing and annual leave, with notice, redundancy and long service leave where payable. Enter a separately established long service leave amount. Its eligibility and valuation depend on the applicable rules.

The gross schedule keeps every component separate and downloads as a CSV file with your calculation inputs. Add any unpaid penalties, allowances or other entitlements outside this ordinary-pay estimate. Amounts in the schedule show cents for reconciliation. The headline shows a whole-dollar estimate.

Move From Gross Entitlements to Tax

In this fictional termination, base weekly pay is $1,850 and eligible service at termination is 5.5 years. Ten weeks of redundancy equals $18,500. The employee is 47 with 5.4 years of service when notice is given, so five weeks of notice applies.

Two notice weeks are worked. The remaining three weeks at $1,950 full weekly pay equal $5,850 in lieu. The final partial pay period has 19 unpaid ordinary hours at $50, giving $950. Those 19 hours include any unpaid worked notice.

Unused annual leave of 76 hours at $50 equals $3,800. Loading at 17.5% adds $665. Confirmed long service leave of $2,400 and an extra contractual payment of $750 bring gross final pay to $32,915.

Reconcile the gross components before applying tax. Redundancy eligibility under employment law does not establish a tax-free amount. Use the separate termination payment tax calculator for genuine-redundancy tax-free amounts, employment termination payments and leave withholding.
