Choose the Vehicle Tax Mode
This car tax calculator estimates purchase duty in WA or NSW, or annual NSW vehicle tax. Each mode uses its own schedule and keeps other charges separate.
Purchase duty is a one-off acquisition cost. Annual vehicle tax recurs with registration. Switching modes clears the previous mode’s inputs and replaces its result. The calculator never adds these taxes together.
The schedule period is 2026-27. Annual mode covers full-year registrations starting from 1 Jul 2026 to 30 Jun 2027. Purchase mode applies the stated WA and NSW duty schedules to a dutiable value you establish.
Vehicle Purchase Duty
Use the legal dutiable value before entering a figure. For a used WA car, that is the higher of its purchase price and open-market value. Trade-in credit does not reduce the vehicle’s value for duty.
A prescribed new WA passenger car uses the manufacturer’s WA retail selling price and relevant optional features. Light commercial and heavy vehicles use their open-market value, or the selling price when higher. Dealer delivery and registration charges are separate from the prescribed new-car value.
Under the RevenueWA vehicle duty rules, non-heavy vehicles use 2.75% up to $25,000. Between $25,000 and $50,000, the rate is 2.75 plus the excess over $25,000 divided by 6,666.66, rounded to two decimals. Above $50,000 the rate is 6.5%.
WA heavy vehicles use 3%, capped at $12,000. Duty is rounded down to the nearest five cents before the estimate displays as whole dollars. Select Confirmed exemption or WA nominal duty only after establishing eligibility. Nominal duty is $20 for qualifying transactions, including certain estate, relationship-breakdown and trust transfers.
In this fictional WA purchase, a used passenger car costs $36,000 and has a $37,500 market value. Enter $37,500. The 4.63% rate gives $1,736.25 duty, displayed as $1,736. The $20.50 transfer fee appears separately. Neither amount includes insurance or annual registration.
For a new NSW vehicle, enter the price paid including GST, excluding an extended warranty. For a used NSW vehicle, use the higher of sale price and market value. The Revenue NSW motor vehicle rules explain valuation and exemptions.
NSW passenger cars use $3 per $100 or part up to $45,000, then $1,350 plus $5 per $100 or part above $45,000. A $50,000 passenger car gives $1,600 duty. Supported light goods vehicles use $3 per $100 or part throughout. A used transfer shows the ordinary $42 timely transfer fee separately. Late fees and special plate charges are excluded.
Annual Registration Tax
Annual mode covers ordinary NSW cars, station wagons and trucks with gross vehicle mass at most 4.5 tonnes. Enter tare weight, which is the vehicle’s unladen weight. Gross vehicle mass is the maximum loaded weight and determines this model’s light-vehicle boundary.
The NSW vehicle tax schedule rounds tare weight to the nearest 10 kg, with five rounded up. At 1,504 kg the calculation uses 1,500 kg. At 1,505 kg it uses 1,510 kg and the next band.
Choose the registration’s business or private classification. A logbook’s business kilometres do not set that classification or reduce the tax by a percentage. For a fictional fleet of three business cars weighing 1,685 kg each, annual vehicle tax is $924 per car, or $2,772 altogether.
Registration fees for that fleet are another $252, using $84 per vehicle. Compulsory insurance, plates and inspection charges need separate budget lines. For business vehicles in the heavier supported bands, the tax includes the published $343 supplement.
The NSW private registration discount reduces eligible full-year private vehicle tax by $100. The effective registration start must fall from 1 Sep 2026 to 31 Aug 2027. Within this calculator’s period, a private 1,685 kg car starting after August has $496 tax before the separate registration fee.
That discount is one-off. Business registrations and vehicles receiving another concession, discount, rebate or refund are excluded. Select Other concession to stop the ordinary estimate and use the official calculator for the client’s treatment.
Check the Vehicle Cost Workpaper
Download the CSV to keep the mode, jurisdiction and schedule period with the client inputs and result. Purchase duty exports the established value and relief treatment. Annual mode records the effective date, use classification and rounded weight band. Fees stay on separate rows.
The CSV keeps the calculated duty before display rounding. The screen shows whole-dollar tax estimates and cents for the separately identified fee. Reconcile the workpaper to the authority’s assessment and the client’s invoice.
For a special vehicle, conditional registration, short-term registration or other concession, use the official NSW registration calculator. For WA duty cases beyond the supported facts, use the WA duty calculator. Other states’ schedules are outside this model.
Federal luxury car tax, import duty and GST are separate from these state levies. Employer car fringe benefits tax and income-tax car deductions also need separate calculations. Use the luxury car tax calculator for the federal levy or the car expense deduction calculator for substantiated deductions.
Your entries stay on this device. The calculator sends no vehicle details to Tax Genie or the authorities and saves none in browser storage.
