Select the Benefit and FBT Year
This FBT calculator estimates employer fringe benefits tax for one car benefit or a net taxable value you enter. Choose the year ending in 2026 or 2027. Each FBT year runs from 1 Apr to 31 Mar.
For a car, select the statutory formula or operating cost method. The statutory formula uses the adjusted base value multiplied by 20% and the proportion of days available for private use. This tool supports modern commitments using that 20% rate.
Enter the correct FBT base value, including GST and relevant accessories. Apply any eligible one-third age reduction yourself before entry. A purchase price or outstanding lease balance can differ from the FBT base value.
Operating costs use your total for the holding period multiplied by the private-use percentage. Include the required deemed depreciation and interest for an owned car, or lease costs for a leased car. The tool does not calculate those costs or apply a second day adjustment. Confirm the prescribed records before claiming a business-use reduction.
For another benefit, enter its net taxable value after all applicable reductions and contributions. The calculator only applies gross-up and FBT to that value. Separate valuation rules, employer exemptions, caps and rebates need their own review.
Car and Novated-Lease Benefits
A novated lease can provide a car fringe benefit. This calculation estimates employer FBT. A complete lease quote also needs finance charges, running costs and the employee’s salary and tax position.
For the employee’s pre-tax and post-tax cash-pay comparison, use the novated lease calculator.
In this fictional full-year example, a car has an adjusted base value of $58,320. The statutory formula gives $11,664 before contributions. An eligible $2,000 after-tax employee contribution reduces the taxable value to $9,664.
With type 1 gross-up, the grossed-up value displays as $20,103 and estimated FBT is $9,448. Without the contribution, FBT is $11,404. The separately calculated FBT reduction displays as $1,955.
For comparison, $18,000 of operating costs with 40% private use gives $7,200 before contributions. The same $2,000 contribution leaves $5,200 taxable and $5,084 FBT using type 1. Use operating costs only with the required records.
Eligible contributions reduce the taxable value to a minimum of zero. Include qualifying payments from after-tax income and documented employee-paid operating costs once. A pre-tax salary sacrifice is not an employee contribution.
Electric-Vehicle Exemption Conditions
Electric-car screening applies the exemption only when every required answer is Yes. An Unsure answer keeps the taxable estimate and identifies the exemption review. A No answer leaves the benefit taxable.
Battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars must meet the vehicle-size rules and the first-held-and-used date condition. The car must be used by a current employee or associate. Luxury car tax must never have been payable on any importation or sale.
For a plug-in hybrid after 1 Apr 2025, exempt use must already have existed before that date. A financially binding commitment made before that date must continue for the whole selected period. A new commitment, including some employer changes or optional extensions, can end the exemption.
Review the ATO electric-car conditions against the agreement and vehicle history. Split periods if eligibility changes during the year. An exempt car can still create reportable fringe benefits. A home charging station needs separate treatment.
The tool stops at the year ending 31 Mar 2027. The Treasury electric-car changes concern later periods and are outside these calculations.
Reconcile and Export the Estimate
The result shows taxable value after contributions and any supported electric-car exemption. Gross-up converts that value into the amount used to calculate FBT at 47%. Use type 1, factor 2.0802, for GST-creditable benefits. Type 2 uses 1.8868.
The ATO FBT calculation steps explain the two gross-up categories. Select the category from your entitlement to GST credits, even if no credit has been claimed.
Estimated amounts display as whole dollars after calculation. The CSV workpaper records inputs and the gross-up factor alongside the exemption answers and results. It opens in a spreadsheet and uses plain numbers.
Reconcile the workpaper with supporting records and other benefits before preparing the employer’s return. The workpaper excludes reportable fringe benefits calculations and return-level rounding. For the wider annual review, use the company tax compliance guide.
Inputs stay on this page. The calculator sends no entered amounts to Tax Genie or the ATO and saves none in browser storage.
Company Car Benefits
An Australian company car tax calculation starts with the car fringe benefit’s taxable value. Use the statutory formula or operating cost method supported above, then deduct eligible employee contributions before gross-up and FBT.
The ATO’s car FBT methods use different records. Confirm the adjusted base value and private availability for the statutory formula, or the holding-period operating costs and supported private-use percentage for operating costs.
UK company-car benefit-in-kind schedules calculate an employee’s taxable benefit using UK rules, including vehicle value and emissions. Those schedules do not calculate Australian employer FBT. This calculator uses the selected Australian FBT year and the benefit facts you enter.
