Repayment Amount or Target Term

This ATO payment plan calculator estimates how many repayments clear an entered tax debt. Choose Payoff time and enter an affordable payment, or choose Repayment and enter the number of payments you want to make.

Weekly payments are seven days apart and fortnightly payments are 14 days apart. Monthly payments use an average month of 365 divided by 12 days. The first regular payment falls one full interval after the upfront payment.

The comparison increases the regular payment by 20%. Its schedule shows both balances after each repayment, with a smaller final payment when needed. A payment that fails to cover the first interval’s interest cannot reduce the debt. The calculator limits proposals to 1,200 repayments.

Interest and an Upfront Payment

An upfront payment reduces the balance before this estimate starts adding interest. In this fictional example, a business owes $28,500 and pays $3,500 immediately. That leaves $25,000 to repay.

At an assumed 11.51% annual rate, $1,350 monthly clears that balance in 21 repayments. Indicative interest is $2,672 and total payments, including the upfront amount, are $31,172. The final repayment is $671.57.

Increasing the regular payment to $1,620 clears the same balance in 17 repayments and saves $474 in interest. With the original $1,350 payment and no upfront payment, the estimate runs for 24 repayments and adds $3,518 in interest.

The estimate divides the annual rate by 365, compounds it for each interval and rounds that interval’s interest to cents. It then subtracts the payment. The ATO’s general interest charge rates change quarterly. This tool holds your chosen rate fixed and uses a 365-day year, so actual dates and later rate changes produce different account charges.

What ATO Approval Still Decides

The ATO decides whether it accepts a repayment arrangement. This calculator estimates a proposal from the amounts you enter. It cannot read an account balance or establish accepted terms.

The ATO’s payment-plan guidance explains that interest continues on a plan. New tax obligations still need to be lodged and paid on time. Allow for those payments when deciding what the business can afford.

Use the ATO payment plan guide for arranging payments. Reconcile the proposal with the actual debt, payment dates and interest charged before acting on it.

Debt Reduction and Forgiveness

Repayments reduce the debt by the amount left after interest. A company tax debt reduction calculation cannot grant debt forgiveness, an interest remission or another ATO concession.

The ATO considers remission of general interest charge and penalties separately. Enter a lower opening balance only after an adjustment is reflected in the amount being modelled.

The ATO’s serious-hardship release provisions apply to eligible individuals and certain debts. Companies, trusts and partnerships cannot use that release process. This estimate makes no allowance for a concession.

All entered amounts stay on this page in your browser. The calculator sends none to Tax Genie or the ATO and saves none in browser storage.
