Choose the Alcohol Tax Regime

This Australian alcohol tax calculator estimates domestic excise, wine equalisation tax (WET) on a taxable wholesale sale or imported spirits duty. Choose the category after establishing how your client’s product is classified.

Domestic beer and spirits use litres of alcohol as their tax base. WET uses the taxable value of wine. Alcohol strength alone does not establish whether a fermented drink qualifies as wine for WET.

The domestic categories cover ordinary commercial beer, brandy, other spirits and other excisable beverages. Brandy must meet the statutory description. Brew-on-premises rates, duty-free spirit uses and excise remission are outside the estimate.

Imported spirits use the rate and additional duty amount you enter. The tool does not select a customs tariff, origin preference or concession. The Australian Border Force alcohol duty notice sets out excise-equivalent rates and identifies categories with additional customs duty.

Quantity and the Applicable Rate

Enter the finished product’s total litres and alcohol by volume. Spirits use volume multiplied by strength divided by 100. Beer uses the strength above 1.15%, so 85.2 litres at 5% produces 3.28 litres of taxable alcohol after rounding.

The packaged beer choice covers containers below 8 litres and containers from 8 to 48 litres that cannot connect to a pressurised gas or pump delivery system. Larger containers and qualifying connected containers from 8 to 48 litres attract draught rates.

The applicable date selects the domestic rate. The supported periods are 2 Feb 2026 to 2 Aug 2026 and 3 Aug 2026 to 31 Jan 2027. Split deliveries across the rate boundary into separate calculations. The ATO alcohol excise tables separate strength bands and packaging categories.

For domestic excise, the tool first rounds litres of alcohol to two decimals, then truncates the quantity to one decimal for duty. This follows the ATO’s worked excise calculations. Imported spirits retain two-decimal quantities here and require separate reconciliation to customs declaration rounding.

Calculate the Supported Duty

Excise is the duty quantity multiplied by the selected dollars-per-litre-of-alcohol rate. The result shows both the alcohol quantity and the duty quantity, so you can trace the truncation. Download the workpaper to keep the inputs and cents calculation alongside the whole-dollar estimate.

For a taxable wholesale wine sale, WET is 29% of the taxable wholesale value before WET and GST. Enter the sale’s taxable value after relevant contract adjustments. The ATO’s WET calculation guidance explains the wholesale base. Wine volume and strength do not multiply the WET amount.

The wine calculation assumes a taxable wholesale sale without a valid quote or exemption. It excludes retail notional wholesale methods, own use, imported wine valuation, wine tax credits and producer rebates. GST is excluded from every result.

For imported spirits, multiply the displayed litres of alcohol by the entered rate, then add the separately entered customs duty amount. Keep GST, freight and import processing charges outside that additional duty field. This result is an alcohol duty estimate, not total landed cost.

Product Examples and Limits

A fictional distiller delivers 840 litres of ordinary spirits at 37.2% during the later supported period. The alcohol quantity is 312.48 litres and the duty quantity is 312.4 litres. At $110.15 per litre of alcohol, the cents calculation is $34,410.86 and the headline estimate is $34,411.

A fictional wine producer makes a taxable wholesale sale valued at $12,500 before WET and GST. WET is $3,625. Using the spirits formula for that sale would apply the wrong tax base.

A fictional brewer delivers 85.2 litres of packaged beer at 5% during the later period. After the 1.15% beer allowance, the duty quantity is 3.2 litres. At $65.03 per litre of alcohol, the estimate is $208.

Establish the ingredients, production method and finished strength before choosing the regime. For beer, also establish container capacity and delivery-system design. Keep the classification evidence with the downloaded workpaper before reconciling a return or customs declaration.
