A Services Australia tax time warning needs a check of the client’s genuine notice and annual family income confirmation. Lodge any required tax returns, identify each partner’s remaining obligations and give the client a separate Centrelink action to complete.
Match Tax Income to Family Assistance
Services Australia balances family assistance by comparing estimated income with actual annual income and the family’s circumstances. Family Tax Benefit (FTB) and Child Care Subsidy (CCS) have separate balancing decisions. An Australian Taxation Office (ATO) assessment supplies income information, while Services Australia decides the family assistance outcome.
Review the client’s taxable income and the adjustments used for family assistance. Adjusted taxable income can include reportable fringe benefits, reportable superannuation contributions and net investment losses. Foreign income and certain tax-free pensions or benefits can also count. Child support paid can reduce the amount used.
For each parent whose return you prepare, reconcile these amounts to the supporting records. Taxable income alone can understate the income Services Australia uses. Keep the relevant partner’s income confirmation on the handover even when your practice acts for only one parent.
FTB and CCS are non-taxable benefits. Carer Allowance is a separate, non-taxable fortnightly payment for eligible carers. Annual carer payments depend on eligibility at the agency’s specified boundary. Carer Supplement has its own rules. Lodging a tax return does not create a universal carer tax-time payment.
Read the Tax Time Warning
Read the notice in the client’s official account before deciding whether it requests income confirmation, missing information or repayment. A forwarded text headed tax time warning does not establish what the client owes.
- Ask the client to open the official myGov app or enter the official myGov website address themselves. They must avoid unsolicited sign-in or payment links.
- Obtain the relevant letter from their myGov Inbox or Centrelink account through your practice’s secure document channel. Keep their sign-in details private.
- Record the payment, income year, requested action and deadline shown in the notice. Identify whose income remains outstanding.
- If the notice cannot be matched to the account, have the client contact Services Australia using its official contact details before paying or supplying information.
myGov’s account-protection guidance explains safe sign-in. For family assistance questions, the Centrelink families line is an official contact route.
FTB generally requires confirmation within 12 months after the financial year ends. CCS also has income-confirmation time limits, with different consequences as periods expire. An ATO lodgement extension does not extend either agency limit. Match the notice to the official FTB time limits or CCS time limits.
Confirm Income Without Duplicating a Return
Decide whether each relevant person must lodge a tax return before choosing how they confirm income. Low income alone does not settle that question. Tax withheld or a child support assessment can create a lodgement requirement. Services Australia’s non-lodgement guidance directs clients to the ATO’s lodgement check.
When a required return is lodged, the ATO sends income information to Services Australia. When a person is not required to lodge, they must tell Services Australia and confirm their income. An ATO non-lodgement advice does not complete that Centrelink step, including when the person had no income.
In a hypothetical household, one parent lodges a return and the partner is not required to lodge. The first parent’s lodgement leaves the partner’s separate agency confirmation outstanding. Give the partner their annual income figures and the non-lodgement action. Another return for the first parent will not resolve it.
Some single clients who received income support throughout the financial year need no further action for FTB balancing. A CCS obligation can still remain. If parents separated, use the payment-specific rules. For CCS, Services Australia tells clients to contact its families line about the former partner’s income. The client does not need to contact that former partner themselves.
Balancing, Supplements and Debts
Balancing can produce an extra payment, no change or a debt. Services Australia checks FTB supplement eligibility when it balances FTB. A maximum supplement or preliminary estimate is not the client’s guaranteed entitlement.
CCS balancing can return amounts withheld during the year if the final entitlement supports a top up. The withheld amount alone does not tell you how much the client will receive. Higher actual family income, changed circumstances or existing debts can affect the outcome.
Compare the agency’s income figures with your completed tax file. Correct an error in the return through the ATO amendment route. Refer disputes about agency eligibility or payment decisions to Services Australia when the tax information is correct.
The official FTB outcome guidance and CCS outcome guidance explain debts and top ups. Debt recovery can use family assistance top ups or the client’s tax refund. The ATO assessment and Centrelink balancing remain separate decisions even when an offset connects the payments.
An ATO assessment does not guarantee that a family assistance claim or balancing decision is complete. Direct individual income-tax refund enquiries to the tax return processing guide. For family assistance, use the client’s Centrelink status and written outcome, without promising a payment date.
Give the Client a Clear Handover
Give the client the completed tax information and a named owner for every remaining Centrelink action. Use the tax return checklist for the wider annual document request. The family assistance handover needs its own completion check.
- Supply the relevant income year and return lodgement confirmation for each client you act for. Add the notice of assessment when available.
- Explain the income adjustments needed for family assistance and identify any figures still missing.
- For anyone not required to lodge, supply the confirmed income figures and instructions to notify Services Australia separately.
- Record any partner confirmation still outstanding, with the person responsible for completing it.
- Ask the client to retain their agency confirmation receipt and later balancing outcome. Compare an unexpected outcome with the income figures supplied.
Your authority to act for a client with the ATO does not automatically authorise Centrelink account access or dealings. Services Australia has a separate nominee arrangement. Confirm the authority before acting and never use the client’s myGov credentials.
For eligibility questions or payment disputes, send the client to the Centrelink families line with the genuine notice and income confirmation evidence. Close the tax-preparation task when its work is complete, while leaving the client’s separate agency action clearly assigned.
